The 9,500 s.f. facility combines the transportation and maintenance operations of the Sherwood School District. Being located in an industrial district, the challenge was to design a facility that related to the surrounding context, while symbolically connecting to the school district.
The solution was to utilize a modular steel building to relate to the industrial surroundings and utilize primary colors to relate to the school district. A simple shed roof with overhangs expresses the roof form and the structural elements. School bus yellow panels accent the corners and create visual excitement. Clerestories introduce natural light into the shop and maintenance areas. Offices are located along the street and have window openings that visually connect the space to the street.
Busses are parked behind the building and screened visually from the street.
